New York City, NEW YORK, United States – “The” Yeshiva University has more reasons to celebrate. YU has been granted official permission to field flag football squads. This announcement includes the opportunity, should players wish, to play on Saturdays, so long as players limit sweating, a source close to ESPN has informed the Associated Press.
The ruling comes from the highest authorities within the sport of flag football. Flag football has been played since at least 1940, and has expanded rapidly at an international level in recent years.
According to The Forward: “This year, Yeshiva University High School of Los Angeles (usually referred to as YULA) joined a new girls’ flag football league co-sponsored by the Rams and Chargers, L.A.’s NFL teams, and at the end of the season, each team was invited to send one player to the Super Bowl. But YULA has had their flag football team since before either of those teams returned to town. It’s one of several Jewish schools across the country where the sport was an instant hit — and where girls played it before boys did.“
People, from New York City to Los Angeles, London to Jerusalem, have been attending football games on Saturdays, without much community pressure from authorities, for generations. According to Professor Murray Sperber in the ESPN Documentary “Dynasties”, while referencing Saturday football game attendance, “...and in each of these cities, huge numbers of fans turned out… many Jews.” Like it or not, football is a Jewish tradition. Now, flag football is a Jewish tradition it seems, as well.
The Head Flag Football Coach of “The” Yeshiva University is Coach Michael Rothschild. Coach Rothschild has provided the following statement, in an attempt to emulate great motivators of yesteryear, for all students, student-athletes, administrators, faculty, staff, and fans of “The” Yeshiva University:
“We're going inside of ‘em, we're going outside of ‘em -- inside of ‘em! outside of ‘em! -- and when we get them on the run once, we're going to keep ‘em on the run. And we're not going to pass unless their secondary comes up too close. But don't forget, women -- we're gonna get ‘em on the run, we're gonna go, go, go, go! -- and we aren't going to stop until we go over that goal line! And don't forget, women -- today is the day we're gonna win. They can't lick us -- and that's how it goes... The first platoon women -- go in there and fight, fight, fight, fight, fight! What do you say, women?”
